One Crore Interns ? Sure, make it Fair and Equitable

In the recent budget, Smt Sitharamanji announced that 500 top companies will be required to train 1 crore ( 100 lakh ) interns over a period of 5 years . That is 20 lakh per year ( for one year internship )

That is  4,000 per year per TOP company

Interns will be paid Rs 5,000 per month plus Rs 6,000 as one time assistance ( Total of Rs 66,000 per intern )

Over 5 year period , this will add up to Rs 66,000 crores

Govt must be congratulated for such a bold initiative having long term impact

In a recent interview on Aaj Tak TV , Smt Sitharamanji also confirmed that this is a strictly VOLUNTARY scheme and that there will be no compulsion on these top companies to take in 4000 interns each year

We must acknowledge the following :

Ø  Most of these ( top 500 ) companies already have their own TRAINEE SCHEMES , both under the provisions of the present APPRENTICESHIP ACT , and under their own schemes which cover those trainees which are NOT covered under the Apprenticeship Act

Ø  Their current TRAINING INFRASTRUCTURE is just adequate to cater to their “ Annual Intake “ against their current schemes

Ø  Both type of schemes ( under the Act and beyond the Act ), stretch over 1 / 2 years

Ø  From the following tabulation, it would be clear that all these companies ( covered by the Apprentice Act ) , are already burdened :

===================================================

In light of the above-mentioned “ Liabilities “, I suggest that the additional requirement ( for training 20 lakh interns EACH YEAR ), instead of being dumped on ” Top 500 “ companies, is fairly and equitably distributed among the “ Top 10,000 “ companies, as shown in tabulation hereunder :

Internship Beneficiaries will be picked in a fair and transparent way ….. TOI …. 25 July 2024

Quote from Interview with Shri T V Somanathan , Finance Secretary [ secyexp@nic.in ]

“ Selection for the internship scheme will be done from a list and not in a way that no one gets employment through the backdoor.

It’s not that this is a way for a company to take in people it would have placed anyway or recruited anyway and claim subsidy.

The list will come from govt from which they will choose.

The entire process will be done in an objective manner through a portal and based on open access.

Those with lower employability will be chosen and we have a negative list of IITs, IIMs, CAs; any person whose family member with assessed income will be excluded.

Govt will soon decide the criteria for selection.
