Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Compulsory voting worth a try in India, says NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant

02 May 2019 Compulsory voting worth a try in India, says NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant https://lnkd.in/fQMGfHg ============================== No doubt, 100 % voting is highly desirable but the question is : Is making it compulsory ( through law ) , an answer ? Would such law become another Un-implementable law ? Will a penalty of even Rs 500 , motivate those rich / lazy voters to go out and spend 2 hours in hot sun ? In India voting %age is 60 % with 40 % not voting That means 360 million voters do not vote Why ? Because : # Some 200 million are hundreds of KM away from the voting booth where they are registered. No way they can take 2/3 days leave # Some 50 million ( like me ) were bed-ridden yesterday with debilitating illness and could not even get up . Another 50 million close family members were attending to them and could not leave their bedside # Some 50 million could not find their names in the voter-lists at polling booth, Why cannot anyone vote from any polling booth ? It is simple !
