Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

NITI floats draft documents for discussion on private passenger trains

09 Jan 2020 News : NITI floats draft documents for discussion on private passenger trains https://lnkd.in/fdR-3HE ============================= Extract : As per the paper, the private operator will have the right to collect market-linked fares and will be provided flexibility of class composition and halts. The privatisation of train operation, the paper said, will help in introducing modern technology and rolling stocks with reduced maintenance. ==================================== This is a welcome move But it must be remembered that privatization by itself may not bring about better / cheaper / faster train services There MUST be competition, with at least 2 / 3 operators , on each line / route On same national highway , several PRIVATE bus-operators are permitted to operate That is why private bus fleets give better / faster / cheaper services Arguments such as : Such condition will make that route " loss making ", and no private party will come forward to bid : must not be entertained ! A railway track is a PUBLIC ASSET , just like a highway !
